Touched by the innocence and forthrightness of the student, Rilke responded to Kappus’ letter and began an intermittent correspondence that would last until 1908. For the most part, Rilke's letters are full of general comments about Life, Love and etc. Kappus, a student at a military academy in Vienna similar to the one Rilke had attended, was about to embark on a career as an officer, for which he had little inclination. There is no practical advice or references to the work sent for a critique. It is always difficult to know how to respond to young poets, and, as none of Kappus's work is included or quoted, one does not quite know what to make of the letters.

So he could sympathise with the young poet (they never met) who went on to be an army officer, but also wrote poems, plays, novels, screenplays and so on.

Rilke (18751926) himself had been sent to the military academy by his parents, and, though he stuck it out for five years, found the experience completely uncongenial. I was interested to discover that a Mumbai publishing house, Yogi Impressions have just reprinted, for the second time, Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, first published in 1929 by the young military academy cadet to whom they were addressed, Franz Xaver Kappus (1883-1966).
